When we talk about stopping crime, we must also talk about self defense. While there are different types of defense (Self, Home, Property), we are going to focus on Your personal defense.

Self Defense is a natural instinct. All living things attempt to protect themselves if they are being attacked. Animals such as the Skunk use the sense of smell as a weapon. Porcupines use the sense of touch, and snakes use pain and poison. You probably get the picture by now. Man was not born with these self defense mechanisms built in. Therefore we have had to invent our own.

Some people keep guns in their home to protect themselves. While a gun maybe very effective. There are many legal issues that need to be considered. Were you truly in the right to shoot this person? Was your life threatened? These are questions that a court would have to decide if you were to kill someone with a gun. Another thing to consider when contemplating carrying a gun is the emotional trauma of actually shooting someone. Ask yourself these questions. Can I actually pull the trigger? Can I shoot someone and not be haunted by this for the rest of my life? While there are a great many people who can answer these questions and actually be able to do it, there are equally as many who cannot.

There area great many non lethal methods of self defense available at very reasonable prices. I will attempt to explain the advantages and disadvantages of some of these products.

Stun Guns: A stun gun is a very effective self defense product. Stun guns use high voltage and low amperage to temporarily disable an attacker for several minutes. The Stun gun does not rely on pain or the person\'s threshold for pain for results. The stun gun interrupts the tiny neurological impulses that control and direct voluntary muscle movement. This involuntary muscle movement in turn causes the attacker to become disoriented and unbalanced, allowing you to get away. The disadvantage is that you must be close enough to the attacker to touch them with the stun gun.

Mace/Pepper Sprays: Mace/pepper sprays are also very effective in the fight to stop-crime. Pepper sprays are designed to make the eyes slam shut and causes uncontrollable coughing and choking, plus a painful burning sensation. This is involuntary, and cannot be stopped. This will allow you to call for help and get away. Pepper sprays can be dispersed in a spray, stream, foam, or gel. The disadvantage of pepper sprays is the fact that they generally need to be pointed at the person while spraying. And the possibility exists that you will inadvertently spray yourself.
Tasers: The Taser shoots out 2 darts attached to 15 feet of wire. Varying volts of electricity (depending on model) travels over the wires and over-rides the central nervous system providing incredible takedown power. The muscles lock up and the attacker falls to the ground almost instantly. Plus the Taser is controlled by the person holding it and can be reactivated as needed. The Taser\'s disadvantage is that there are widely varying laws regarding the use and whether it can be carried in public.

As I have shown here, there are several products out there to help protect you. There are also many more. Always research a product before purchasing. And remember; only YOU can stop-crime.
